Daily Innovation: A Snapchat Account to Showcase Your Classroom and School

I’ve been writing a lot about Snapchat recently, as I’ve seen it take over my phone as one of the top apps I use to connect with my family and friends. I’ve talked about it’s use in education, it’s implications for events, and also why I let my six-year old use it! Recently, I was looking at a new trend of people “taking over” Snapchat channels for a day to show their world to a new audience, and I thought, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do that in education with Snapchat!

Wouldn’t it be cool if…

That’s the thought that is constantly running through my head most days.

  • Wouldn’t it be cool if we could watch and observe a lesson without being in the room (hint: you can with Virtual Reality).
  • Wouldn’t it be cool if students could actually learn what they interested about in school (yay, for Genius Hour!).
  • Wouldn’t it be cool if students could solve real world problems supporting the UN 2030 Goals (woohoo, visit 2030schools.com).

But most of the time ideas that I’ve had or that we’ve had as a group of teachers don’t pan out. And that’s ok. I wanted to build an app last year for “Pocket PD” and I failed miserably at making it happen.

On Twitter a couple weeks ago I posed this question after having a “wouldn’t it be cool” moment with Snapchat:

And, the responses were amazing. Teachers, administrators, and all kinds of educators were pumped about this idea. Now, the Snapchat Channel is real and going live on Monday, August 22nd.

But this isn’t a Snapchat channel just for me, it’s for all of us. I’m linking to a Google Doc below where you can Sign-up to TAKEOVER the Snapchat Channel for a day. Showcase what your school, your classroom, your conference is all about with a huge education community on Snapchat.

Each month, we’ll take the “Best of Daily Innovation” and post a short video highlighting what happened in the world of education! You can follow this Snapchat account by entering in the username “innovationdaily” into Snapchat – or by using the picture below (Screenshot it and use it inside of Snapchat).

InnovationDaily Snapchat Channel via @ajjuliani

  1. Open up Snapchat.
  2. Select the ghost icon in the top middle of the screen.
  3. Select Add Friends.
  4. Select Add by Snapcode.
  5. Select the photo of the snapcode from your albums.

Now’s the time when you can sign up your classroom, school, conference, event (or whatever) to take over this Snapchat Channel for a day! Enter your information on the Google Doc (please, no taking other people dates!). Then I’ll send you an email with the username and password to take over the Snapchat Account for the day.

Happy Snapping!

Perfect timing to read this. I just created a SnapChat account for usage in my classroom; this account will be an opportunity to share my classroom. I am encouraging students to create individual English class accounts to submit projects, such as modern personal narratives. I am walking into this carefully by making an educational account and having students make educational accounts, so they share the aspects of their lives that are appropriate for school.

Hi Marc, thanks for sharing this. Love your idea around modern personal narratives! Would love for you to share the account when you can.

  • This is a fascinating idea, AJ. I have followed the account so I can watch it. I’m still very much a newbie with Snapchat, and I have had a difficult time becoming comfortable with the app. I’ll be interested to see how this goes. Thanks for all you share. -Philip
