Real Lessons You Can Use Tomorrow From The Achievery

Every now and then you stumble across a resource that was truly made for teachers. When Tom Murray first showed me The Achievery, I didn’t know what to expect.

Then I dove in. And it has so many great lessons, activities, and resources.

Oh, and it is free. No catch!

The Achievery is a website and lesson hub that has 7 subject categories and over 1000 videos, all paired with learning activities that can be accessed at home, in the classroom, and in their communities.

Whether you are an educator looking for innovative ways to teach and plan your lessons, a parent or caregiver seeking additional resources for your children, or a motivated student searching for new challenges and opportunities, The Achievery provides the best experience for you.

Examples of resources for parents, caregivers, students, and educators to use at home or in their communities include:

  • Developing an original idea for a video game with Voice Urban Arts

  • Learning about safe and healthy relationships with Media Smarts

  • Finding and pursuing interests with Roadtrip Nation

And they are just getting started. The Achievery is constantly adding new videos and learning activities.

When you first go to the site it will have you go through a pretty painless and quick sign-up process.

Once you are in, the Home Screen will look like this:

You can dive into the “All Units” area, use the Search feature, or keep scrolling for more information and subject specific focus:

A topic I’ve been very interested in lately has been Screen Time. I was working with a group of Middle School students and we used the below activity to start the conversation about Screen Time.

You’ll notice each activity has multiple lesson plans, videos, or media (like this comic strip) that you are able to use free of copyright issues.

A few other cool things they have on the site:

Interactive units

Learn actively with our new interactive units, which combine engaging videos with hands-on activities. Look for the interactive tag and leave the PDFs behind.

Campus

Welcome to Campus, your new account page! Customize and track your experience on The Achievery: monitor your progress, revisit favorite activities, and resume watching from where you left off.

Easily revisit or work on your preferred units by adding them to your favorites list. Access them anytime directly from Campus.

Organize ideas

(Teacher feature only) You can now add private notes to the units you plan to use with your class. Simply browse the units, tap the pencil icon to add your thoughts, and revisit your notes anytime through Campus.

Final Thoughts

The content, activities, and lessons all come from ASCD and other Collaborators linked below.

The Partners tie in highly relevant clips and media to the topics and standards we are teaching in schools right now.

This has been one of my go-to free resources I share with teachers, and something you can go back to again and again.

Check it out right here and hope you can use these with your students!
